Taking The Emergency Exit From A Wind Turbine

Birt 3 maí 2021
Wind turbines have emergency exits, but they might not be for the reason you think. • Thanks to Octopus Energy: octopus.energy/octopus-fan-club/ (This video isn't sponsored, but obviously they did let me go up their wind turbine.)

  • I couldn't find a way to fit this into the video, but rather wonderfully, this turbine is called Octopus Energy's "#1 Fan". Thanks to all the team there, and the rope access team at EWT. This wasn't sponsored, and Octopus had no control over the final video, but obviously they did let me go up their conveniently-branded wind turbine in an effort to boost their brand. (If any other companies would like to show me around their conveniently-branded spectacular facilities, they should definitely get in touch...!)

    • Only 7 birds will die instead of millions if you PAINT THEM RED!!! With outward spiralling motives. Like a WARD!!

    • GOOGLY EYES HAT!!!!

    • Yes but being 50 meters up is far more scary than 6 foot up!

    • @AcogR6 what did kings of kings say

    • @Kalel Alex Yea, been using Flixzone for months myself =)

  • I think the interior of the structure, especially the column upon which the turbine sits, is quite fascinating!

  • when u are way too much inspired by call of duty warzone

  • i would be so scared

  • I hold a class 1 Medical License for aviation. I wonder how different mine are to theirs.

  • You can go in them?

  • I would be rappelling down, much quicker. should try climbing northern Ontario fire towers. some up to 400' high, with ladders exposed to the environment. fun on a windy day...

  • can i- please do this?

  • Only 7 birds will die instead of millions if you PAINT THEM RED!!! With outward spiralling motives. Like a WARD!!

  • I'm a big fan of this video

  • wow, that was some advanced green screen.

  • Who’s watching this after the pandemic? 😷

  • Would be better to have a spiral slide to take you back down

  • I would be out.... passed out as soon as I got to the top.

  • Wempt

  • I climb towers. Real ones. Good job not freezing up

  • Nucking Futs to that goofy way down!

    • Meanwhile Fred Dibnah would have gone up the outide with his own ladders and no ropes and only a flatcap and a packet of woodbines for protection

  • What a thrill...

  • Neoliberal jackass propaganda

  • You have balls of steel to do a "trust fall" at that height. just wow

  • "I've got two wires on me,I've got 2 wires on me":)

  • why i hate wind turbines..they cannot replace oil and gas as a power source because they do not generate enough power....they are massive machines that require a ton of fossil fuel just to manufacture, install, and maintain. They fill the landscape and when they e are are turning they have a huge effect on birds. ITS BEYOND STUPID TO THINK THAT WIND POWER IS THE ANSWER

  • Imagine having to jump from there like that pic of those workers stuck on a wind turbine on fire.

  • Now I want to see the guy who was filming the descent

  • The 21st Century John Noakes?;)

  • So how long did it take to get down that way vs other way?

  • These monstrosities have to be manufactured and hauled by huge trucks into place and after about ten years they fail and must be hauled away again and the net savings on CO2 are probably NEGATIVE and on top of that they kill birds by the millions and turn the great open plains into Robot Land.

  • *Yeets me out of the emergency exit.*

  • you need to have a lot of faith in the coworkers who are lowering you down! a bungee would be more fun!

  • Speak English

  • Gotta love the flat view.

  • Now do it in the dark during an ice storm with 60 kmph wind.

  • Meanwhile Fred Dibnah would have gone up the outide with his own ladders and no ropes and only a flatcap and a packet of woodbines for protection

  • Can’t stop watching

  • i would want a parachute

  • One thing for sure turbines will never leave a carbon footprint.

  • All I could think about is don't touch the harness, don't touch the harness, don't touch the harness, don't touch the harness, don't touch the harness, don't touch the harness, DON'T TOUCH THE HARNESS!!!

  • Climbing a ladder straight up with no tea shop on the way, definitely for the fittest of us.

  • i love the google eyes

  • i can barely stand watching this i keep getting that heights feeling and its starting to bother me bye

  • Emergency: a broken ankle EMERGENCY: a broken tower

  • just use a water elevator

  • My anxiety rised so much at 4:28 😂😂😂

  • Turbine height is the height of COLOSSAL TITAN😶

  • Awesome!!

  • There are indeed many many dangerous situations in this industry. And never climb on a ladder with a other guy unless it has to be that way AND there is closed hatch between the two. Never unhook someone else if you don't really have to ( for several reasons).

  • Assuming someone is incapacitated enough to require being lowered, the placement of the emergency exit, being up a ladder seems impractical. I will never have to worry about that. As I wouldnt go up one of these if there was a bag of cash at the top.

  • welcome to the sweaty hand club, come in, we got drinks

  • I hate when he's at the top you can see the entire thing move

  • amogus

  • Very similar rigging we do on my search and rescue team

  • Ah yes, the Fight, flight, or "I've got two wires on me" response.

  • I got nervous just watching you lean at the top of the turbine. Great video!

    • Woahhhhhh!!!

  • Next brave vid pls sleep in a wind turbine

  • We have these beauties in Albany on the southern tip of Western Australia. They're phenomenal!

  • Tom "Two Wires" Scott

  • Anybody else's legs went numb when: 4:25

  • When I was in highschool 20 years ago, we visited a wind turbine as part a science project. It wasn't as high as this one, but the view from the top was just as brilliant :)

  • Watching him step off was the most nervewracking thing for someone with a fear of heights

  • I wonder how long it took for people to notice the googly eyes on Tom's hard hat. 🤔

  • I've got two wires on me. I've got two wires on me 😂😂😂. Convincing himself 🤣

  • "I've got two wires on me I've got two wires on me I've got two wires on me" hahahahaha love it

  • No thanks I'm fine right here.. 😜

  • "this will attach to your sternum" that doesn't sound safe and quite painful. anyone up for having their sternum ripped out of their chest? if he's talking about something else it desperately needs a new name.

  • ok where do i signup for that job!

  • I wish I had the chill energy this dude Ben has.

  • Those googly eyes on his helmet

  • Blue shirt EWT guy sounds very much like the Icelandic accent

  • Woahhhhhh!!!

  • The center of the turbine looks like the inside of a space station.

  • You made the same kind of noises I'd make IF I were doing that.

  • Anybody know who asked?

  • I always thought there were stairs inside :( I'm so disappointed

  • I thought they use parachute 😞

  • Is the harness also redundant? Would be a pity if your two cables are fine, but a single tear in the harness would still get you falling to the ground.

  • I'm not sure if you guys could tell, But tom had 2 wires on him

  • BIG BALLS!! 👌🏼

  • Welldone geeza i bet that took your brain some convincing to lean back there haha

  • i love the dude being interviewed, absolute legend

  • こんなもん 30年ももたんだろ

    • this just activated my claustrophobia

  • Blooper- Turbine comes on , cables get caught and Tom goes for a ride in giant circles . BlllOOOoooOOOoooDDDyyy HHHEeeeEEEeeeEEEeeeLLL!

  • this gives me anxiety

  • Yea, only if it were that easy!

  • What is the life expectancy of a wind turbine? And how much does it cost to dismantle one? How many birds per year do they kill?

  • How much does it cost to change blades?

  • How long does it take for these wind turbines to become profitable?

  • I work in wind, in the US. I climb 80 meter towers every day, but unfortunately have never been allowed to do an external evacuation. No longer a part of our training, we use dummies for practice. Jealous!

  • This definitely has radiation right ?

  • this is one of Tom's coolest videos

  • 3:47 Ok... that's as much of this as I can watch. :-}

  • Hey I do this every day rn haha. Our turbines are 280 feet tall tho

  • I can't even begin to imagine the amount of fear I wold have descending.

    • @Runstar Homer haahahahha

    • I nearly had a panic attack just watching

  • There be googly eyes on his helmet

  • I got stressed out watching this video

  • this just activated my claustrophobia

  • The fire service would climb this.

  • My hands and feet started sweating watching his descent.

  • I'm a strong, *_strong_* advocate for nuclear energy due to it being clean and safe (despite what many may be lead to believe due to a certain... erm, soviet incident... not like the soviets are exactly who we should be turning to for the concept of quality and safety standards) but my god, this looks so cool! I'd love to work on these things!

  • For some reason it never occurred to me that Wind Turbines had doors and had interiors. I thought they were maintained from the outside.

  • when you started going off the edge i got so much anxiety
